Background of the Study
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic blood disorder that affects millions worldwide, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa (Ogunmodede et al., 2024). The disease is characterized by the production of abnormal hemoglobin, leading to the formation of sickle-shaped red blood cells that cause blockages in blood vessels and result in pain, anemia, infections, and organ damage (Adeyemi et al., 2023). Nurses are essential in the management of SCD, particularly in acute care settings where patients may present with complications such as vaso-occlusive crises, infections, or strokes.
Gombe State Specialist Hospital, a leading healthcare facility in northeastern Nigeria, serves a large population of patients with sickle cell disease. While management guidelines for SCD exist, research suggests that nurses may face challenges in providing optimal care due to inadequate training, resources, or experience with the complications associated with the disease (Musa et al., 2024). Effective nursing care requires timely recognition of complications, pain management, and appropriate interventions to reduce the risk of long-term complications.
This study aims to examine nurses' preparedness for responding to medical complications associated with sickle cell disease at Gombe State Specialist Hospital.
Statement of the Problem
Sickle cell disease presents numerous medical complications that require prompt and effective intervention. Despite the critical role nurses play in the care of patients with SCD, there may be gaps in their preparedness for recognizing and managing these complications. This study seeks to explore the knowledge, training, and readiness of nurses at Gombe State Specialist Hospital to manage the acute and chronic complications of sickle cell disease.
Objectives of the Study
To assess nurses' knowledge of the medical complications associated with sickle cell disease at Gombe State Specialist Hospital.
To evaluate nurses' preparedness to manage complications of sickle cell disease.
To identify factors that influence nurses' ability to respond effectively to sickle cell disease complications.
Research Questions
What is the level of knowledge among nurses regarding the medical complications of sickle cell disease?
To what extent are nurses prepared to respond to complications associated with sickle cell disease?
What factors affect nurses' ability to effectively manage sickle cell disease complications?
Research Hypotheses
Nurses with specialized training in sickle cell disease management are more knowledgeable about its complications.
Nurses with more years of experience are better prepared to manage sickle cell disease complications.
The availability of resources and treatment protocols positively influences nurses' preparedness to manage sickle cell disease complications.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses working in the hematology and emergency departments at Gombe State Specialist Hospital. Limitations may include variability in nurses' exposure to sickle cell disease cases, differing levels of training, and the availability of resources. The study may also be limited by the subjective nature of self-reported preparedness.
